Duck Hunting in Texas

Duck Hunting Limits in Texas Explained: Daily Limits & More

Duck hunting limits in Texas aren’t hard to follow once you break them down. The part that trips people up is that the six-duck daily limit doesn’t mean you can shoot six of any species. Several ducks have their own smaller limits. And some, like dusky ducks, have added season rules.

That makes bird identification a big part of staying legal. You need to know what’s coming through the timber before you pull the trigger. Light can be low early in the morning. Birds move fast. And in flooded timber, you may only get a short look before they pass through an opening.

Texas Duck Hunting Regulations and Daily Bag Limits

Texas duck rules cover more than the number of birds you can bring home. They also set season dates, shooting hours, legal guns, shell capacity, shot type, and possession limits.

It’s the hunter’s job to know those rules. A guide can help you in the field, but each hunter is still responsible for knowing what species they shoot and keeping track of their own birds.

State Daily Bag Limit and Species Sub-Limits

For the 2026–2027 regular duck season, the Texas daily bag limit is six ducks in the aggregate. Mergansers are included in that total.

Within those six birds, a hunter may take no more than:

  • Five mallards, with no more than two hens
  • Three wood ducks
  • Three pintails
  • Two redheads
  • Two canvasbacks
  • One scaup
  • One dusky duck

A dusky duck includes mottled ducks, Mexican ducks, black ducks, and their hybrids. Dusky ducks are closed during the first five days of the regular season in each Texas duck zone. After that closure ends, the limit is one per day. For duck species that aren’t listed under a smaller limit, a hunter may take up to six. But the full daily bag still can’t go over six ducks total.

The statewide coot limit is 15 per day. Texas also has an early teal season. For 2026, it runs September 19 through September 27 statewide. The daily limit is six teal in the aggregate. Those may be blue-winged, green-winged, or cinnamon teal. The regular duck limit and species mix don’t apply during the September teal-only season.

Zone Season Structure and Shooting Hours

Texas is split into three duck hunting areas: the High Plains Mallard Management Unit, the North Zone, and the South Zone. The zone matters because season dates don’t all match.

Circle M Hunts is located near Mineola in East Texas. That puts the hunting area in the North Zone. For the 2026–2027 regular duck season, North Zone dates are:

  • November 14–29, 2026
  • December 5, 2026–January 31, 2027

Legal shooting hours for ducks are one-half hour before sunrise through sunset. That doesn’t mean “about 30 minutes before the sun comes up.” Check the correct sunrise time for the exact location and date of the hunt. A few minutes can be the difference between a legal start and shooting too early.

Booking a Guided Texas Duck Hunt

A guided hunt can make sense if you’re coming from out of state, new to duck hunting, or don’t have access to good private ground. You still need to handle your license and know the limits. But you won’t have to scout unfamiliar water, haul a full spread, or figure out where birds have been moving on your own.

Flooded Timber and Swamp Wood Duck Hunts Near Dallas

Circle M Hunts is based near Mineola, east of the Dallas area. The property has swampy timber, flood bottoms, and natural water sources that create the kind of cover wood ducks use.

This isn’t the same style of hunting as watching distant ducks work a wide-open field. Timber birds can appear quickly. You may hear wings before you see them. Then a wood duck slips between the trees and gives you a short window to make a clean shot.

That fast pace is part of the appeal. It also rewards hunters who keep their gun ready, stay still, and listen to the guide. Wood ducks are a main draw, but migrating puddle ducks may also use the property’s water and timber.

Guided Services, Decoy Setups, and Bird Cleaning Included

Guided packages include decoys, blinds, boats, dogs, and bird cleaning. Lodging and other accommodations can also be arranged. This setup takes care of the biggest pieces of the hunt. Guides can choose a location based on current conditions, set the spread, and help the group understand how birds are approaching. A trained dog can also make a big difference when a bird falls into water or thick cover.

Bird cleaning at the end of the hunt is another useful part of the package. But hunters still need to transport birds legally. Migratory bird rules cover tagging and keeping enough identification attached during transport in certain situations. Ask the guide how your birds will be prepared before putting them in a cooler and heading home.

Texas duck hunting limits give everyone a chance at a mixed bag, but the species rules matter. For 2026–2027, the regular daily limit is six ducks. That total includes smaller limits for mallards, wood ducks, pintails, redheads, canvasbacks, scaup, and dusky ducks.

Before the hunt, check the North Zone dates. Get your Texas hunting license, Migratory Game Bird Endorsement if required, HIP certification, and Federal Duck Stamp. Bring a legal plugged shotgun and non-toxic shells. And spend some time brushing up on duck identification, especially hens and dusky ducks.

At Circle M Hunts, we offer guided duck hunting in flooded timber and swamp habitat near Mineola, within reach of the Dallas area. The guides handle the blinds, decoys, boats, dogs, and bird cleaning, so your group can spend more time hunting and less time hauling gear. If a quick wood duck hunt through East Texas timber sounds like your kind of morning, contact us with your group size and preferred dates.
