What Will this Year Look Like

We’ve had good rain this year, which means full tanks, flooded fields, and plenty of food for migrating waterfowl. Combine that with a strong hatch up north and you’ve got the makings of an outstanding season. Early reports already show strong wood duck numbers, with the rest expected to follow suit in full force. At Circle M, scouting for the perfect spot never ends. Our blinds are brushed, decoy spreads are dialed in, and we’re tracking flight patterns daily. The ducks are coming and we’re ready.

At Circle M, we hunt in the heart of the South Zone. Season dates generally run from early November to late January. Our location offers the perfect mix of flooded croplands, marshes, and ponds that attract big numbers of migrating ducks all season long.

Meet the Birds: Ducks of South Texas

When you hunt South Texas, you’re in for a mixed bag. The region sits at a crossroads on the Central Flyway, pulling in a wide range of species. Circle M offers the necessary terrain, guide services and decoy setup to help hunters achieve their goals whether they want to hunt one species or multiple.

Wood ducks are our most common visitor. Northern Pintail are often the first to commit and favorite among seasoned hunters. Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal are early season flyers and lightning quick. Wigeon, Shoveler, and Mottled Ducks are local and migratory birds that add variety to the hunt. Redheads and Canvasbacks show up later in the season, often over deeper water. You never know what’s going to hit the spread, each hunt has its own surprises.

Preparing for the Hunt

The more you prepare, the more you’ll enjoy the experience. Here’s a quick checklist before your hunt at Circle M:

  • License & Stamps: You’ll need a Texas hunting license, a Migratory Game Bird Endorsement, and a Federal Duck Stamp.
  • Gear Up: Waders, camouflage, and weather-appropriate layers are a must. A good shotgun and a few boxes of quality steel shot will go a long way.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Get to the range and dial in your shot. Our shooting range is available to all clients during their stay.
  • Know the Forecast: South Texas weather can flip fast. Come prepared for anything from cool mornings to warm afternoons. Bring multiple layers of clothing for all temperatures.

If you’re not sure what to bring, our team is always happy to guide you through the prep. We want you to feel confident and comfortable when the first birds buzz the spread.

Essential Knowledge for a Texas Duck Hunt

South Texas duck hunting isn’t just about pulling the trigger. It’s about reading the wind, understanding duck behavior, and working as a team in the blind. Here are a few tips that to remember:

  • Concealment is key. Ducks can spot movement and glare from a mile away.
  • Timing matters. Legal shooting light starts early, and often the first 30 minutes of light are the hottest.
  • Calling with confidence. A few well-timed quacks or feeding chuckles will often do the trick better than a hailstorm of calling.
  • Patience is important. Wait until birds are committed. There’s nothing like seeing feet down and wings locked before making your move.

The Circle M Hunt: Tactics and Strategies

At Circle M, we don’t do “cookie-cutter” hunts. Every day is different, and we adapt to what the ducks are doing. We shift blinds based on wind direction, adjust decoy spreads to mimic natural behavior, run motion decoys or jerk cords on calm days, and alter our calling patterns depending on how birds are responding.

Our guides live and breathe this stuff. They’re out scouting when the rest of us are still sleeping, and they’ve got a sixth sense for knowing when and where the ducks will fly.
